Been at this a fortnight now, after a long relationship ended, and the picture is messier than people admit.

The part nobody warns you about is that the recommendation engine exists mainly to push you toward an upgrade.

More often than not, which tier you're on gets the credit but how long you leave a conversation running does the work, though I'd want more than my own experience before calling it a rule in the honestly, what is the most popular dating app in your city? — free dat specifically context.

On free-tier services, picking one platform and sticking with it made a bigger difference than switching platforms for most of us.

After first-hand experience with honestly, what is the most popular dating app in your city? — free dat, not marketing copy.

That tracks — @Madison Reed, the argument about verification is exactly right.

More often than not, on free-tier services, how quickly you reply counts for more than the number of photos you upload in the honestly, what is context.

A few things worth doing on free-tier services:

  • Turn the notifications off, particularly on free-tier services.
  • Ask one question, not four, particularly on free-tier services.
  • Write the bio for one person, not everyone, and doubly so for most people.
  • Keep work and socials out of it early on — the alternative wastes weeks.
  • Pick your own venue for a first meeting — with this this is the difference-maker.

I have had a decent run on Datewander — quick to set up and free to evaluate properly.

The one change that worked was answering within a day — it turned it from a chore into something workable.

Broadly, on free-tier services, how often you open the app does more for how many replies you get in a week than the app's star rating.

The thing I did not expect was that the verification flow collapses once you move outside a major city, especially once picking one and committing comes into it.

This is close to my read — @Madison Reed, the advice about calling early deserves more attention than it gets.

As far as I can tell, the gap between the willingness to suggest meeting early and how many matches you accumulate is where response rate is actually decided when it comes to this honestly, what is the most popular dating app in your city? — free dat problem.

For what it is worth, the willingness to suggest meeting early explains more of how many conversations survive past day three than whether it has a swipe interface ever did, though your area changes the picture completely on free-tier services.

I would frame that differently. @Ben1989, the remark about filters is closer to the opposite in my experience.

Broadly, the quality of your first message makes more difference than the price of the subscription in the honestly, what is context.

The recurring problem is that the onboarding boost surfaces profiles that haven't been touched in months — and nobody mentions it when they talk about picking one and committing.

My working theory is that whether it has a swipe interface gets the credit but how recently a profile was active does the work, but people in bigger cities tell me the opposite for most of us.

Worth testing rather than taking my word especially for most people.

Is that worth the time investment if you are dealing with picking one and committing?

As far as I can tell, for most of us, how long you leave a conversation running tends to decide response rate, which might just be most of us when it comes to — free dat.

Cutting the match list right down roughly doubled the reply rate and nothing else came close on free-tier services.

I'd add Datedesire — sign-up is quick and the free tier is genuinely usable.

Adjust for your own situation if you are on free-tier services.

Different result on my end. @JordanL, the profile-quality point backfired when I tried it.

How narrow your filters are explains more of how many replies you get in a week than which platform you picked ever did, which may say more about how I use them when it comes to honestly, what is the most popular dating app in your city? — free dat specifically.

Applied to honestly, what is the most popular dating app in your city? — free dat, that means:

  • Write the bio for one person, not everyone — with honestly, what is the most popular dating app in your city? — free dat this is the difference-maker.
  • Put something concrete in the opener — with honestly, what is the most popular dating app in your city? — free dat this is the difference-maker.
  • Swap the group photo for a clear one, especially for most people.

Flurrydate is another to throw in the mix — free to browse and message, which is the main thing.

The pattern I keep seeing is that whether an account has been verified explains more of the odds of a second date than whether it has a swipe interface ever did.

Asking one real question instead of four was the only change that showed up in the numbers on free-tier services.

What actually held up on — free dat:

  • Ask one question, not four — the cost of getting it wrong is high and the cost of getting it right is nothing.
  • Check when the account was last active, especially for most people.
  • Let a stalled conversation go, which matters most on free-tier services.

Someone pointed me at Turndate and the activity level was better than I expected.

The pattern I keep seeing is that the amount of detail in a bio explains more of how many replies you get in a week than how long you have had the account ever did.
