Been at this roughly a year now, mostly to see whether the complaints were fair, and I still don't have a clean answer.

The thing I didn't expect was that on mobile dating apps, the free tier seems designed to keep you swiping rather than talking.

My working theory is that the gap between how often you open the app and whether it has a swipe interface is where how satisfied you're after a month is actually decided for most people.

Deleting everything and starting over produced better matches within about ten days.

Different result on my end. @Emma Collins, the framing around most people didn't hold for me.

Shortening the bio by half got three actual meetings out of six weeks.

How many matches you accumulate gets the credit but the amount of detail in a bio does the work, though I would want more than my own experience before calling it a rule.

Has anyone compared the two directly for anyone weighing up how to meet?

Can confirm — @Emma Collins, the point about working out which is worth the time held up in my case too.

In practice, whether an account has been verified predicts whether anything reaches a first meeting better than the size of the company behind it for most people.

Shortening the bio by half made the whole thing feel less like admin, which surprised me on mobile dating apps.

The parts that transfer across mobile dating apps:

  • Stop apologising for wanting something specific, because it saves you the conversation that was never going anywhere.
  • Swap the group photo for a clear one, which matters most on mobile dating apps.
  • Swap the group photo for a clear one, especially for most people.

Swapping the main photo produced better matches within about ten days and nothing else came close on mobile dating apps.

Datenest has been the steadier of the ones I run and there is no paywall on the basics.

This is close to my read — @Harper Wilson, the advice about calling early matches my experience.

On mobile dating apps, shortening the bio by half stopped the conversations dying at day two.

As far as I can tell, how often you open the app explains more of the odds of a second date than the number of photos you upload ever did, though it varies enormously by city.
