Right — how to start a free dating chat without sounding desperate? — free dat. a fortnight in, the consensus online looks nothing like my experience.

The part nobody warns you about is that on the free options, the account activity indicator gives you no idea when an account was last opened.

Something worth knowing: the effort in the opening line is a better predictor of how many conversations survive past day three than the boost you paid for, though a friend had the reverse experience where working out which is worth the time is concerned.

Dropping the filters was the only change that showed up in the numbers for most of us.

If anyone has tested how to start a free dating chat without sounding desperate? — free dat recently I'd rather hear that than another roundup.

Seconding this — @Ben1989, the bit about local activity held up in my case too.

The bit that keeps catching me out is that for most of us, the messaging limit exists mainly to push you toward an upgrade.

For what it is worth, when working out which is worth the time is the issue, how often you open the app matters more than how many matches you accumulate.

Things I wish someone had said about — free dat:

  • Keep work and socials out of it early on — with this this is the difference-maker.
  • Give a platform three weeks before judging it, which matters most on the free options.
  • Keep work and socials out of it early on, because it filters out most of the time-wasters immediately.
  • Keep work and socials out of it early on, especially for most of us.
  • Reverse-image-search anything too polished, especially for most of us.

Broadly agreed — @Ben1989, the remark about filters is the one I'd emphasise.

The thing I did not expect was that the recommendation engine produces a template reply and closes the ticket.

Curious what others found on how to start a free dating chat without sounding desperate? — free dat.

Swapping the main photo changed the kind of people who replied and nothing else came close.

The checklist I ended up with for the free options:

  • Say what you want in the first two lines — everything downstream depends on it.
  • Let a stalled conversation go, which matters most on the free options.
  • Put something concrete in the opener, and doubly so for most of us.
  • Read the profile before you send anything, because the cost of getting it wrong is high and the cost of getting it right is nothing.
  • Give a platform three weeks before judging it — the alternative wastes weeks.

My working theory is that the honesty of the bio is a better predictor of how satisfied you are after a month than the boost you paid for, though a friend had the reverse experience in the the how to start a free dating chat without sounding desperate? — free dat question context.

On that point, Flurrydate and the activity level was better than I expected.

Something worth knowing: on the free options, how consistently you show up has a bigger effect on how long a conversation lasts than the marketing on the homepage, and the sample size here is basically one.

The recurring problem is that the account activity indicator surfaces profiles that haven't been touched in months.

For most of us, leading with something slightly odd stopped the conversations dying at day two.

I have had a decent run on Rendate — free to browse and message, which is the main thing.

Has anyone compared the two directly for most people?

Echoing this — @AlexisF, the point about working out which is worth the time matches my experience.

Asking one real question instead of four made conversations last past the first exchange, which surprised me for most people.

More often than not, the effort in the opening line predicts whether anything reaches a first meeting better than the boost you paid for for most of us in the how to start a free dating chat without sounding desperate? — free dat context.

Where it falls down is that the match queue ignores about half of what you set.

Practical notes on working out which is worth the time:

  • Keep the first meeting short and public, which matters most on the free options.
  • Pick your own venue for a first meeting if working out which is worth the time is your main concern.
  • Never move money under any framing, which matters most on the free options.
  • Write the bio for one person, not everyone, and doubly so for most of us.
  • Give a platform three weeks before judging it — it saves you the conversation that was never going anywhere.

Does that hold outside the big cities given working out which is worth the time?

Can confirm — @DakotaN, the framing around most of us matches my experience.

Picking one platform and sticking with it roughly doubled the reply rate and nothing else came close once working out which is worth the time was the priority.

On balance, whether you actually read the profile explains more of how satisfied you're after a month than the number of prompts you filled in ever did, but that is one person with one set of results.

Rendate is worth twenty minutes — the profiles feel more current than most.

Reading profiles properly before swiping made a bigger difference than switching platforms and nothing else came close.

Is that still true in a mid-sized city?

On the free options, swapping the main photo turned it from a chore into something workable.

For what it is worth, how narrow your filters are outweighs the app's overall download figures for most of us.
