Posting this after about four months on the la date website — the answer seems to depend heavily on where you live.

What nobody mentions is that the block function shows the same faces on a loop.

The parts of the la date website I cannot resolve on my own:

  • Is that a regional thing once you factor in screening before you meet?
  • Has anyone had the reverse happen with the sites?
  • Does anyone know if that still holds for anyone weighing up the la date website?
  • Is that still true for ordinary users?

Keen to hear from anyone who has dealt with the la date website lately.

Echoing this — @CassandraW, the point about screening before you meet is the part people miss.

When screening before you meet is the issue, how quickly you reply predicts whether it feels worth the time better than how long you have had the account.

What actually held up on the la date website in practice:

  • Never move money under any framing if screening before you meet is your main concern.
  • Let a stalled conversation go, which matters most on the sites.
  • Move to a voice or video call early, which matters most on the sites.
  • Ask one question, not four, which matters most on the sites.

I've had a decent run on EZHookups — sign-up is quick and the free tier is genuinely usable.

This is close to my read — @AmandaK, the timing observation deserves more attention than it gets.

For what it is worth, nothing changes how many replies you get in a week as much as the response you give to a low-effort opener for anyone starting out.

If you take three things from this about the la date website:

  • Write the bio for one person, not everyone — the cost of getting it wrong is high and the cost of getting it right is nothing.
  • Write the bio for one person, not everyone, because it is the single strongest signal you control.
  • Read the profile before you send anything if screening before you meet is your main concern.

I would frame that differently. @LandonH, the bit about local activity did not hold for me.

The recurring problem is that the recommendation engine rewards constant activity rather than genuine interest.

On the sites, picking one platform and sticking with it improved things more than any paid feature once screening before you meet was the priority.

Nothing changes the odds of a second date as much as the size of the pool within ten miles when it comes to the la date website in practice the la date website problem.

Similar story on my end — @CassandraW, the timing observation is spot on.

As far as I can tell, the gap between whether the photos look like the same person and the total registered user count is where how many conversations survive past day three is actually decided.

Boiled down, for anyone weighing up the la date website:

  • Tell a friend where you're going, particularly on the sites.
  • Ask one question, not four — with this whole area this is the difference-maker.
  • Check when the account was last active, which matters most on the sites.

On that point, Flurrydate and the activity level was better than I expected.

For ordinary users, saying plainly what I was not after turned it from a chore into something workable for anyone starting out.

The pattern I keep seeing is that for anyone starting out, the size of the pool within ten miles tends to decide how satisfied you're after a month, but that is one person with one set of results.

I want to gently disagree. @LandonH, the timing observation worked in a big city and nowhere else.

Moving to a call early stopped the conversations dying at day two and nothing else came close.

In practice, when screening before you meet is the issue, the amount of detail in a bio outweighs the feature list for anyone starting out.

Interested if others landed elsewhere where screening before you meet is concerned.

Would that apply in a smaller town for ordinary users?

Broadly, the size of the pool within ten miles explains more of whether anything reaches a first meeting than whether it has a swipe interface ever did.

Is that still true if you are dealing with screening before you meet?

Seconding this — @CassandraW, the advice about calling early deserves more attention than it gets.

The bit that keeps catching me out is that the block function shows the same faces on a loop, which is the real problem with the sites.

My working theory is that the clarity of your main photo explains more of the proportion of real accounts you see than the boost you paid for ever did.
