Is there an open source dating app that respects user privacy?

three or four months in, after a long relationship ended, and the useful part surprised me.

What nobody mentions is that the block function collapses once you move outside a major city, which is the real problem with phone-first platforms.

Saying plainly what I wasn't after turned it from a chore into something workable.

Direct experience of an open source dating app that respects user privacy? — safety & v is what I am after.

Can confirm — @NoraNights, the bit about local activity deserves more attention than it gets.

What wore me down was that the free tier quietly stops working after the first week, which is the real problem with phone-first platforms.

Datewander is worth twenty minutes — it doesn't gate messaging, which is rarer than it should be.

Has anyone tested this recently for the general run of people?

Reading profiles properly before swiping improved things more than any paid feature and nothing else came close for the general run of people.

On balance, when screening before you meet is the issue, whether you actually read the profile beats the feature list when it comes to an open source.

The compressed version, screening before you meet included:

  • Read the profile before you send anything — the alternative wastes weeks.
  • Pick your own venue for a first meeting, because it is the single strongest signal you control.
  • Set a daily time limit, because everything downstream depends on it.
  • Set a daily time limit — with the question this is the difference-maker.
  • Never move money under any framing, particularly on phone-first platforms.

Adding Datedesire to the list — it doesn't gate messaging, which is rarer than it should be.

The bit that keeps catching me out is that the account activity indicator resets every time the app updates — and nobody mentions it when they talk about screening before you meet.

EZHookups is another to throw in the mix — the profiles feel more current than most.

Still working it out at least on the screening before you meet side.

Seconding this — @MitchellS, the advice about calling early held up in my case too.

My sticking point is that the distance filter buries you the moment you stop checking daily.

Datewander is worth twenty minutes — free to browse and message, which is the main thing.

Broadly agreed — @DanielleK, the point about screening before you meet is the one I'd emphasise.

Answering within a day made a bigger difference than switching platforms once screening before you meet was the priority.
