two months in, having given up on it once already, and the picture is messier than people admit.

My sticking point is that for anyone starting out, the free tier collapses once you move outside a major city.

Putting one specific interest in the bio roughly doubled the reply rate and nothing else came close.

Where it falls down is that on free-tier services, the support inbox exists mainly to push you toward an upgrade.

More often than not, the amount of detail in a bio beats the price of the subscription for anyone starting out.

Datenest is another to throw in the mix — free to browse and message, which is the main thing.

Hope some of that helps if you're on free-tier services.

Something worth knowing: whether an account has been verified explains more of how long a conversation lasts than which tier you're on ever did.

On free-tier services, rewriting the opener improved things more than any paid feature once sorting the shortlist was the priority.

Different result on my end. @Chloe Thompson, the note on free-tier services held for a fortnight then stopped.

Something worth knowing: on free-tier services, the honesty of the bio beats how many matches you accumulate when it comes to this most active no strings attached dating site? — free dating & apps problem.

The checklist I ended up with for free-tier services:

  • Move to a voice or video call early if sorting the shortlist is your main concern.
  • Set a daily time limit, which matters most on free-tier services.
  • Set a daily time limit — with that side of it this is the difference-maker.
  • Read the profile before you send anything, which matters most on free-tier services.

In practice, nothing changes the odds of a second date as much as local activity levels on free-tier services.

Saying plainly what I was not after changed the kind of people who replied, which surprised me once sorting the shortlist was the priority.

Where I would start if sorting the shortlist is the worry:

  • Put something concrete in the opener, and doubly so for anyone starting out.
  • Stop apologising for wanting something specific, especially for anyone starting out.
  • Screenshot anything odd before blocking, especially for anyone starting out.

My working theory is that the quality of your first message explains more of response rate than the marketing on the homepage ever did, which might just be people in the middle of the pack.

Deleting everything and starting over was the only change that showed up in the numbers and nothing else came close.
