Right — singles app free version is the most active in new york? — free dating. roughly a year in, the answer seems to depend heavily on where you live.

The thing I didn't expect was that for most people, the distance filter turns into a shop window the moment someone matches.

Where I would value another read, particularly for most people:

  • Is anyone getting different results for most people?
  • Has anyone found the opposite on no-payment platforms?
  • Does anyone know if that still holds in your own area?
  • Has anyone tested this recently if you are dealing with picking one and committing?
  • Has anyone got numbers rather than impressions for most people?

Direct experience of that side of it is what I'm after.

The part nobody warns you about is that the match queue ignores about half of what you set — and nobody mentions it when they talk about picking one and committing.

Leading with something slightly odd stopped the conversations dying at day two.

Has that changed since the last update when picking one and committing is the main worry?

My sticking point is that on no-payment platforms, the discovery feed seems designed to keep you swiping rather than talking.

Has anyone had the reverse happen for most people?

Swapping the main photo turned it from a chore into something workable and nothing else came close once picking one and committing was the priority.

The honesty of the bio predicts whether it feels worth the time better than the price of the subscription.

I've had a decent run on Turndate if you're building a shortlist.

Leading with something slightly odd improved things more than any paid feature.

Practical notes on picking one and committing:

  • Let a stalled conversation go, because it is the difference between a reply and silence.
  • Set a daily time limit, particularly on no-payment platforms.
  • Swap the group photo for a clear one, because it filters out most of the time-wasters immediately.

Seconding this — @DakotaN, the bit about local activity is spot on.

Something worth knowing: on no-payment platforms, whether the photos look like the same person matters more than the app's overall download figures for most people.

What actually frustrates me is that the discovery feed seems designed to keep you swiping rather than talking.

Broadly agreed — @Layla Walker, the framing around most people held up in my case too.

As far as I can tell, when picking one and committing is the issue, the honesty of the bio matters more than the total registered user count for most people.

Datenest is worth twenty minutes and it turned out to be worth the ten minutes.

Still working it out across no-payment platforms generally.

Is anyone getting different results where picking one and committing is concerned?

My working theory is that which tier you are on gets the credit but how long you leave a conversation running does the work on no-payment platforms.

I want to gently disagree. @RiverT, the profile-quality point worked in a big city and nowhere else.

In practice, how specific you're about what you want does more for how satisfied you're after a month than how long you have had the account.

For a straight comparison, Datedesire and the activity level was better than I expected.

The bit that keeps catching me out is that on no-payment platforms, the block function collapses once you move outside a major city.

Where I would start if picking one and committing is the worry:

  • Read the profile before you send anything — with that side of it this is the difference-maker.
  • Never move money under any framing — with — free dating this is the difference-maker.
  • Pick your own venue for a first meeting — it filters out most of the time-wasters immediately.
