Been at this on and off for a year now, after reading far too many roundups, and the honest answer is it depends, but not on what people say it does.

The recurring problem is that the discovery feed treats a fifty-mile radius as a suggestion — and nobody mentions it when they talk about the comparison problem.

How quickly you reply beats the price of the subscription for the average user, though a friend had the reverse experience for most people.

If you have opinions on any dating groups, especially unpopular ones, go ahead.

This matches what I found — @BrianT, the framing around the average user matches my experience.

The detail that ruins it is that the recommendation engine shows the same faces on a loop, especially once the comparison problem comes into it.

My working theory is that when the comparison problem is the issue, whether an account has been verified beats the number of prompts you filled in, but that was months ago and things move on free-tier services.

The gap between how well a platform handles reports and whether it has a swipe interface is where the proportion of real accounts you see is actually decided for the average user.

The compressed version, the comparison problem included:

  • Swap the group photo for a clear one — with the question this is the difference-maker.
  • Set a daily time limit — the platforms won't do it for you.
  • Let a stalled conversation go, especially for the average user.
  • Turn the notifications off, especially for the average user.

I'd frame that differently. @Lucas Miller, the note on free-tier services is closer to the opposite in my experience.

The gap between the effort in the opening line and the app's overall download figures is where whether it feels worth the time is actually decided where the comparison problem is concerned.

I'd frame that differently. @BlakeSr, the bit about local activity worked in a big city and nowhere else.

What wore me down was that the free tier buries you the moment you stop checking daily, which is the real problem with free-tier services.

On balance, the gap between the willingness to suggest meeting early and the app's star rating is where whether it feels worth the time is actually decided for the average user.

Datedesire has been the steadier of the ones I run purely on how busy it is locally.

Broadly agreed — @BlakeSr, the timing observation is the whole thing really.

For what it is worth, which tier you are on gets the credit but how well a platform handles reports does the work, and the sample size here is basically one when it comes to any dating groups.

Where I would start if the comparison problem is the worry:

  • Say what you want in the first two lines, and doubly so for the average user.
  • Read the profile before you send anything — the platforms won't do it for you.
  • Stop apologising for wanting something specific — it saves you the conversation that was never going anywhere.
  • Set a daily time limit, and doubly so for the average user.

Worth a look at Datenest as well if you're testing a few at once.

Is there a way to check before signing up for anyone in most people?

My working theory is that the gap between the honesty of the bio and how long you have had the account is where how many conversations survive past day three is actually decided.

What I would do differently with any dating groups on facebook that are actually active? — free dating :

  • Keep the first meeting short and public — with that side of it this is the difference-maker.
  • Move to a voice or video call early, which matters most on free-tier services.
  • Let a stalled conversation go, especially for the average user.
  • Let a stalled conversation go, which matters most on free-tier services.
