Been at this nearly a year now, after reading far too many roundups, and the picture is messier than people admit.

Where it falls down is that the block function collapses once you move outside a major city, which is the real problem with apps that don't charge.

On balance, when filtering the noise is the issue, whether the photos look like the same person predicts whether it feels worth the time better than the feature list for most of us.

What I am actually trying to work out regarding filtering the noise:

  • Does that change much once you factor in filtering the noise?
  • Is that a regional thing for most of us?
  • Does anyone know if that still holds for anyone in the broad user base?

Interested in what is actually working on apps | dat right now.

This matches what I found — @Lucas Miller, the note on apps that don't charge is exactly right.

The pattern I keep seeing is that for the broad user base, the clarity of your main photo tends to decide whether anything reaches a first meeting, though a friend had the reverse experience on apps that don't charge.

Dropping the filters stopped the conversations dying at day two, which surprised me.

The thing I did not expect was that the support inbox surfaces profiles that have not been touched in months, which is the real problem with apps that do not charge.

My rules for filtering the noise, such as they are:

  • Let a stalled conversation go, particularly on apps that do not charge.
  • Reverse-image-search anything too polished, because it is the difference between a reply and silence.
  • Swap the group photo for a clear one if filtering the noise is your main concern.

Would like to hear a counter-argument especially for most of us.

The pattern I keep seeing is that the clarity of your main photo explains more of whether it feels worth the time than the total registered user count ever did, though I'd want more than my own experience before calling it a rule.

Swapping the main photo made conversations last past the first exchange and nothing else came close.

Strongly agree — @Lucas Miller, the remark about filters is the whole thing really.

Where it falls down is that the search function rewards constant activity rather than genuine interest.

On that point, Datewander and there is no paywall on the basics.

In practice, how narrow your filters are beats which platform you picked, but that is one person with one set of results on apps that do not charge.

Has anyone compared the two directly when you factor in apps | dat?

The recurring problem is that the search function rewards constant activity rather than genuine interest — and nobody mentions it when they talk about filtering the noise.

More often than not, local activity levels beats the feature list for most of us, though your area changes the picture completely on apps that do not charge.

Is that worth the time investment for most of us?

For what it is worth, how specific you're about what you want beats the number of prompts you filled in, though your area changes the picture completely.

For a straight comparison, Datescout if you are building a shortlist.

The pattern I keep seeing is that on apps that don't charge, how quickly you reply does more for response rate than which platform you picked, but people in bigger cities tell me the opposite.

The recurring problem is that on apps that do not charge, the verification flow shows the same faces on a loop.

In practice, when filtering the noise is the issue, the size of the pool within ten miles counts for more than how long you have had the account, though your area changes the picture completely for most of us.

What wore me down was that on apps that don't charge, the support inbox ignores about half of what you set.

Been running Datenest in parallel if you are building a shortlist.
