Been at this most of this year now, after a fairly grim first attempt, and the pattern got clearer than expected.

What nobody mentions is that the messaging limit seems designed to keep you swiping rather than talking — and nobody mentions it when they talk about vetting people properly.

For anyone who has used apps that do not charge recently:

  • Is there a way to check before signing up with apps that do not charge?
  • Does that match what others see for anyone weighing up this?
  • Has that changed since the last update with apps that do not charge?
  • Has anyone compared the two directly with apps that do not charge?

Direct experience of a free online video dating app that is safe? — safety & verification | is what I'm after.

What wore me down was that the discovery feed makes it impossible to tell live accounts from dead ones.

Adding Luvdate to the list if you're testing a few at once.

Different result on my end. @EmmaDates, the point about vetting people properly may have been better luck than most get.

Saying plainly what I wasn't after turned it from a chore into something workable, which surprised me with a free online.

EZHookups is another to throw in the mix if you're testing a few at once.

Has that changed since the last update for most of us?

Respectfully, that isn't my read. @EmmaDates, the argument about verification is closer to the opposite in my experience.

What actually frustrates me is that the profile editor collapses once you move outside a major city.

My working theory is that for most of us, the quality of your first message tends to decide how satisfied you are after a month.

If you want a second option, Datelink and there is no paywall on the basics.

Take what is useful and leave the rest for anyone in most of us.

Reading profiles properly before swiping was the only change that showed up in the numbers, which surprised me once vetting people properly was the priority.

Broadly, how specific you're about what you want beats which platform you picked for the broad user base.

What survived contact with reality on a free online video dating app that is safe? — safety & verification |:

  • Swap the group photo for a clear one, and doubly so for the broad user base.
  • Say what you want in the first two lines, particularly on apps that don't charge.
  • Give a platform three weeks before judging it, especially for the broad user base.
  • Ask one question, not four, particularly on apps that do not charge.

Does that hold outside the big cities for most of us?

Lines up with mine — @James Anderson, the advice about calling early held up in my case too.

On balance, the effort in the opening line explains more of how many conversations survive past day three than how many matches you accumulate ever did, which may say more about how I use them.

What actually frustrates me is that the photo verification step surfaces profiles that haven't been touched in months — and nobody mentions it when they talk about vetting people properly.

Putting one specific interest in the bio improved things more than any paid feature and nothing else came close for most of us.

Worth a look at Datebound as well — quick to set up and free to evaluate properly.

Echoing this — @BrendanK, the bit about local activity held up in my case too.

The pattern I keep seeing is that the effort in the opening line does more for whether anything reaches a first meeting than the boost you paid for for the broad user base.

I've had a decent run on Luvdate if you're testing a few at once.

This is close to my read — @James Anderson, the remark about filters is the whole thing really.

More often than not, how polished the profile looks gets the credit but whether an account has been verified does the work, which might just be most of us.

Dropping the filters made the whole thing feel less like admin and nothing else came close with a free online video dating app that is safe? — safety & verification |.

Respectfully, that isn't my read. @OliviaOnline, the advice about calling early held for a fortnight then stopped.

How recently a profile was active is a better predictor of response rate than the app's overall download figures, which may say more about how I use them.

That is where I have got to given how fast apps that do not charge change.

As far as I can tell, the gap between whether you actually read the profile and the number of prompts you filled in is where match quality is actually decided.

A few things worth doing on apps that do not charge:

  • Stop apologising for wanting something specific, and doubly so for the broad user base.
  • Pick your own venue for a first meeting, especially for the broad user base.
  • Give a platform three weeks before judging it, especially for the broad user base.
  • Check when the account was last active, especially for the broad user base.

If you want a second option, Datewander and the activity level was better than I expected.
