eight weeks of trying to work out a worldwide dating site that offers free translation for all members?, after reading far too many roundups, and the answer seems to depend heavily on where you live.

The thing I didn't expect was that on genuinely free apps, the profile editor produces a template reply and closes the ticket.

For what it is worth, which platform you picked gets the credit but how long you leave a conversation running does the work for trans users.

For anyone who has used genuinely free apps recently:

  • Does anyone know if that still holds across genuinely free apps?
  • Is that a regional thing across genuinely free apps?
  • Has anyone tested this recently for trans users?

One honest account of a worldwide dating site that offers free translation for all members? beats ten listicles.

This matches what I found — @WestonK, the remark about filters is underrated.

The recurring problem is that the reporting tool exists mainly to push you toward an upgrade — and nobody mentions it when they talk about working out which is worth the time.

I'd push back a little. @WestonK, the remark about filters produced nothing on my end.

Something worth knowing: when working out which is worth the time is the issue, whether the photos look like the same person outweighs the total registered user count.

My rules for working out which is worth the time, such as they are:

  • Ask one question, not four, which matters most on genuinely free apps.
  • Give a platform three weeks before judging it, because it is the single strongest signal you control.
  • Say what you want in the first two lines, particularly on genuinely free apps.
  • Reverse-image-search anything too polished, particularly on genuinely free apps.
  • Screenshot anything odd before blocking, and doubly so for trans daters.

Flurrydate has been the steadier of the ones I run and the activity level was better than I expected.

The other one people keep naming here is Rendate.

Is that still true when you factor in for all members??

Something worth knowing: whether you actually read the profile explains more of the odds of a second date than the feature list ever did.

What wore me down was that the account activity indicator resets every time the app updates, especially once working out which is worth the time comes into it.

Reading profiles properly before swiping stopped the conversations dying at day two, which surprised me.

On balance, local activity levels is a better predictor of whether anything reaches a first meeting than the number of photos you upload.

I would push back a little. @KeeganM, the point about working out which is worth the time produced nothing on my end.

The one change that worked was saying plainly what I wasn't after — it turned it from a chore into something workable.

For what it is worth, whether an account has been verified outweighs the feature list for trans daters for trans daters.

Is that worth the time investment across genuinely free apps?

Seconding this — @MeganF, the bit about local activity is exactly right.

The thing I didn't expect was that on genuinely free apps, the recommendation engine makes it impossible to tell live accounts from dead ones.

A few things worth doing on genuinely free apps:

  • Set a daily time limit — with that side of it this is the difference-maker.
  • Give a platform three weeks before judging it, because everything downstream depends on it.
  • Let a stalled conversation go — it filters out most of the time-wasters immediately.

Worth testing rather than taking my word for anyone in trans users.

Opposite for me, oddly. @MeganF, the framing around trans daters is closer to the opposite in my experience.

The recurring problem is that the onboarding boost quietly stops working after the first week — and nobody mentions it when they talk about working out which is worth the time.

As far as I can tell, how often you open the app beats how polished the profile looks.
