Been at this an embarrassing amount of time now, after moving to a new city, and I still do not have a clean answer.

My sticking point is that the discovery feed surfaces profiles that haven't been touched in months.

How recently a profile was active explains more of whether it feels worth the time than the marketing on the homepage ever did.

Open questions, if anyone has dealt with top dating sites for finding long-term love? — free dating & apps :

  • Has anyone tested this recently once you factor in cutting through the roundups?
  • Is that a regional thing with relationship-focused platforms?
  • Is anyone getting different results outside the area you actually search in?
  • Does anyone know if that still holds if you are dealing with cutting through the roundups?
  • Has anyone tested this recently when cutting through the roundups is the main worry?

Interested in what is actually working on top dating sites right now.

On balance, which platform you picked gets the credit but how quickly you reply does the work, though I'd want more than my own experience before calling it a rule.

The part nobody warns you about is that the free tier surfaces profiles that have not been touched in months — and nobody mentions it when they talk about cutting through the roundups.

Adjust for your own situation where cutting through the roundups is concerned.

I want to gently disagree. @CarterB, the bit about local activity worked in a big city and nowhere else.

What nobody mentions is that the reporting tool makes it impossible to tell live accounts from dead ones, which is the real problem with relationship-focused platforms.

My working theory is that on relationship-focused platforms, how often you open the app outweighs the app's overall download figures when it comes to apps | da.

The one change that worked was setting fixed hours for it — it made conversations last past the first exchange.

Short version for most people:

  • Write the bio for one person, not everyone if cutting through the roundups is your main concern.
  • Stop apologising for wanting something specific, particularly on relationship-focused platforms.
  • Put something concrete in the opener — with that side of it this is the difference-maker.
  • Reverse-image-search anything too polished if cutting through the roundups is your main concern.

Luvdate is another to throw in the mix — sign-up is quick and the free tier is genuinely usable.

On relationship-focused platforms, asking one real question instead of four was the only change that showed up in the numbers for most people.

When cutting through the roundups is the issue, local activity levels matters more than the total registered user count.

Someone pointed me at Datewander — quick to set up and free to evaluate properly.

That is where I've got to at least on the cutting through the roundups side.

Does that match what others see where cutting through the roundups is concerned?

Is there a way to check before signing up for most people?

My working theory is that how specific you are about what you want beats which platform you picked for most people for the average user.

Luvdate has been the steadier of the ones I run — sign-up is quick and the free tier is genuinely usable.

The one change that worked was setting fixed hours for it — it cut the wasted time by more than half.

On balance, how many matches you accumulate gets the credit but how long you leave a conversation running does the work.

Adding Datebound to the list — quick to set up and free to evaluate properly.
