I started looking at best dating services in my city? — free dating & apps | datingfly comm six weeks ago after a fairly grim first attempt, and the answer seems to depend heavily on where you live.

The thing I didn't expect was that the support inbox gives you no idea when an account was last opened, especially once deciding where to spend the effort comes into it.

Where I would value another read, particularly for most people:

  • Has anyone compared the two directly across apps that do not charge?
  • Is anyone getting different results on apps that do not charge?
  • Is there a way to check before signing up on apps that do not charge?
  • Does that match what others see across apps that do not charge?
  • Is that still true in wherever you happen to live?

For most people, leading with something slightly odd changed the kind of people who replied.

Direct experience of that side of it is what I'm after.

Does that change much for people in the middle of the pack?

On balance, how narrow your filters are explains more of how many replies you get in a week than the feature list ever did.

Short version for most people:

  • Read the profile before you send anything — it is the single strongest signal you control.
  • Reverse-image-search anything too polished, which matters most on apps that don't charge.
  • Reverse-image-search anything too polished, especially for most people.

On that point, Turndate and it turned out to be worth the ten minutes.

Lines up with mine — @Nora Rodriguez, the profile-quality point is the part people miss.

For most people, saying plainly what I wasn't after turned it from a chore into something workable.

Someone pointed me at Rendate — the profiles feel more current than most.

On balance, the gap between how often you open the app and how long you have had the account is where the odds of a second date is actually decided.

Where it falls down is that the photo verification step turns into a shop window the moment someone matches.

What actually held up on | datingfly comm:

  • Swap the group photo for a clear one, because it is the difference between a reply and silence.
  • Screenshot anything odd before blocking if deciding where to spend the effort is your main concern.
  • Pick your own venue for a first meeting, which matters most on apps that don't charge.

Respectfully, that isn't my read. @BroderickA, the advice about calling early backfired when I tried it.

The pattern I keep seeing is that nothing changes how many replies you get in a week as much as the quality of your first message on apps that don't charge.

Does that hold outside the big cities once you factor in deciding where to spend the effort?

On apps that don't charge, setting fixed hours for it made conversations last past the first exchange.

I'd add Rendate and it turned out to be worth the ten minutes.

Is there a way to check before signing up for most people?

My experience was almost the opposite. @Zoey Clark, the remark about filters reads as survivorship bias to me.

Cutting the match list right down got three actual meetings out of six weeks and nothing else came close.

The bit that keeps catching me out is that the reporting tool throttles how many people can actually see you, which is the real problem with apps that don't charge.

More often than not, for people in the middle of the pack, how often you open the app tends to decide match quality, but that is one person with one set of results.

Curious what others found on | datingfly comm.

Has that changed since the last update once you factor in deciding where to spend the effort?
