Right — dirty gay chat roulette mostly bots or real guys? — safety & verificat. a fortnight in, the pattern got clearer than expected.

My sticking point is that for gay men, the recommendation engine seems designed to keep you swiping rather than talking.

Broadly, the gap between the effort in the opening line and how many matches you accumulate is where response rate is actually decided, which might just be gay users for gay men.

Direct experience of dirty gay chat is what I am after.

This is close to my read — @HannahB, the point about risk screening deserves more attention than it gets.

How many matches you accumulate gets the credit but how consistently you show up does the work, but that is one person with one set of results where risk screening is concerned.

The bit that keeps catching me out is that the onboarding boost produces a template reply and closes the ticket — and nobody mentions it when they talk about risk screening.

The recurring problem is that the notification system treats a fifty-mile radius as a suggestion.

For gay users, how consistently you show up tends to decide match quality, although the platforms change constantly.

Suggesting a meeting inside two weeks roughly doubled the reply rate with dirty gay chat.

Strongly agree — @DustinF, the bit about local activity is spot on.

The bit that keeps catching me out is that the onboarding boost exists mainly to push you toward an upgrade — and nobody mentions it when they talk about risk screening.

Is there a way to check before signing up in your particular market?

Is that worth the time investment for anyone in gay users?

More often than not, the effort in the opening line counts for more than whether it has a swipe interface on phone-first platforms.

Rewriting the opener made the whole thing feel less like admin, which surprised me for gay users.

Can confirm — @DustinF, the note on phone-first platforms is the whole thing really.

For gay men, deleting everything and starting over roughly doubled the reply rate on phone-first platforms.

More often than not, the willingness to suggest meeting early has a bigger effect on how satisfied you are after a month than how many matches you accumulate for gay men where risk screening is concerned.

Has anyone got numbers rather than impressions if you are dealing with risk screening?

Something worth knowing: the effort in the opening line is a better predictor of how satisfied you are after a month than the app's overall download figures, though it varies enormously by city in the dirty gay chat context.

Adding Flurrydate to the pile — no paywall on the basics.

Strongly agree — @HunterV, the advice about calling early is the one I'd emphasise.

As far as I can tell, the gap between local activity levels and the app's star rating is where how many replies you get in a week is actually decided.

Which tier you are on gets the credit but the willingness to suggest meeting early does the work, though I would want more than my own experience before calling it a rule.

The recurring problem is that on phone-first platforms, the match queue throttles how many people can actually see you.

For a straight comparison, Turndate if you want something to compare against.

Does anyone know if that still holds if you are dealing with risk screening?

That tracks — @RiverT, the remark about filters is the one I would emphasise.

On phone-first platforms, suggesting a meeting inside two weeks made a bigger difference than switching platforms for gay men.

Broadly, on phone-first platforms, how long you leave a conversation running has a bigger effect on whether it feels worth the time than how polished the profile looks.

The parts that transfer across phone-first platforms:

  • Turn the notifications off, because the cost of getting it wrong is high and the cost of getting it right is nothing.
  • Stop apologising for wanting something specific, because the cost of getting it wrong is high and the cost of getting it right is nothing.
  • Stop apologising for wanting something specific, because it is the single strongest signal you control.
  • Pick your own venue for a first meeting if risk screening is your main concern.
  • Read the profile before you send anything — the platforms will not do it for you.

Broadly agreed — @HunterV, the bit about local activity matches my experience.

For what it is worth, how narrow your filters are is a better predictor of response rate than how many matches you accumulate in the safety & verificat context.

Curious what others found on dirty gay chat.
